Technology in one form or another is an essential part of our everyday lives, both at home and at work, after all we all love our gadgets. Dentistry is no exception and the modern dental practice is no exception; we now have automated text and email messages to remind patients about appointments and we even have the facility that allows patients to book their appointments online. Our clinical notes are securely recorded in bespoke software on our computers, which means they are readily available, and most importantly completely legible. However, technology is developing at a phenomenal pace and systems that were installed 10 years, whilst still functional, are starting to creak and groan and show their age.
We have recently revamped our computer system and upgraded our software, but the really exciting bit is the new 3D dental imager that is being installed at this very moment. This is a tremendous enhancement that will benefit all our patients with the improved diagnostic capability. It will be a real boon when assessing and planning all of our implant cases as will be able to visualise the jaw in 3-dimensions, rather than a flat 2D image. There will no more treks to Birmingham to get a scan done, we will have that facility at the practice.
Mr Sunil Bhatia, our Consultant Oral & Maxillo-Facial Surgeon, will be able to offer an extended range of treatment services, without the requirement for an additional referral for the relevant imaging. Mr John Chadwick, our Consultant Orthodontist, will be able to more accurately assess orthodontic patients with the enhanced imaging capability.
I appreciate that not everyone enjoys the universal and relentless march of technology, but I believe this is an exciting development at the Dental Spa that will benefit all of our patients.
