For the majority Christmas is a time to celebrate. Filled with parties, celebrations, and quality time spent with friends and family. Sadly this is not the case for everyone and all to often Christmas can become a day to remember for all the wrong reasons.
Expectations of family and friends can cause no end of stress and anxiety. Not to mention the unrealistic expectation we put on ourselves to provide the ‘perfect’ Christmas which fits everyone’s ideal. The cold darkened nights often force us to stay indoors with over exited children. Add to the mix financial pressures, child care, Christmas shopping, cooking, wrapping, receiving guests, putting up the tree, walking the dog, keeping on top of the house and the constant mess the children make on an hourly basis for the entire two weeks they are off school.
Logistics aside, Christmas for some can mean a truly harrowing time, filled with sadness, self-reflection, loneliness, and anxiety. For some the excuse for that extra drink can mean physical and mental abuse. With all this stress it’s no wonder January has the highest divorce rate than another other time of year.
If you find this time of year particularly stressful or daunting, you may benefit from some short term talking therapy (counselling) or life coaching to talk about your feelings and anxieties in order to get you through. Learn coping strategies and ways to combat stress at what can be a very challenging time of year.
